WERA workshops

The Outreach working group is new and was formed in 2020 during the ENAI conference in Dubai. The group aims to develop strategies to provide accessibility of resources, training, advice and expertise to institutions, individuals and students to help establish a culture of integrity beyond borders. 

As part of our active efforts, Dr Salim has forged a collaboration with the World Education Research Association – Doctoral Early Career Network (WERA-DEC) to support PhD students and early-career researchers through hands-on workshops related to ethics and integrity in education and research. The workshop details are as follows:

e-Workshop 1 – 5th March 2021 | 2pm – 4pm CET

Title: ‘Developing academic writing skills’

Synopsis:

Developing academic integrity is closely connected to the development of the academic writing skills. In this workshop, the different genres of academic writing as well as the characteristics of writing styles that are used in academia will be discussed. Special focus will be put on the purpose and the function of references in academic texts and on the areas that many students perceive as gray spots of referencing. Through different exercises, the participants will get a better understanding of the concept of referencing and the knowledge on how to avoid plagiarism.

e-Workshop 2 – 12th March 2021 | 2pm – 4pm CET

Title: ‘Research ethics and ethical approval’

Synopsis:

This workshop will focus on the importance of ethical approval for conducting research. Despite the fact there may be institutional procedural differences, the basic steps of obtaining ethical approval are the same. The workshop will elaborate on the effects on an unbiased ethical compliance on establishing research excellence and provide an insight on ethical considerations for conducting research in education, pedagogy, science, economics, IT and medicine.  Therefore it is suitable for all young researchers, post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers.

e-Workshop 3 – 19th March 2021 | 2pm – 4pm CET

Title: ‘Interpreting text-matching software similarity reports’

Synopsis:

The workshop is a mixture of information, discussion and activities to make participants think about the issue of plagiarism. Participants are encouraged to share their personal experience. We will talk about the understanding of plagiarism, discuss several scenarios and assess their severity. Within the workshop, we will present results from European-wide surveys about plagiarism. We will discuss what the plagiarism detection tools are able to discover, where are their limits and how to read similarity reports.

Instructors: Dr Tomas Foltynek (Mendel University Brno, Czech Republic) and Dr Dita Dlabolova (Mendel University Brno, Czech Republic)
